Tupu Ora Regional Eating Disorders Service

Public Service, Mental Health Service

The name, 'Tupu Ora', was gifted through a collaborative process where whai i te ora (service users/health consumers/patients) were involved. 'Tupu’ means to grow, flourish, nourish and ‘Ora’ means to be well, recover, maintain wellbeing.

Tupu Ora is the Auckland regional specialist service providing an integrated multidisciplinary team (MDT) which includes psychiatrists, dietitians, nurses, senior medical officers, psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, Māori cultural advisor and occupational therapists.

Under Tupu Ora there are two primary areas of care: Tupu Ora Community and Tupu Ora Residence (or Eating Disorders Unit; EDU).

Tupu Ora Community provides:

  • Our community catchment includes all of the Auckland Metro region including Waitematā, Te Toka Tumai Auckland and Counties Manukau. We work alongside all three major hospitals in Auckland (North Shore Hospital, Auckland City Hospital and Middlemore Hospital).
  • We accept referrals for Auckland residents presenting with moderate to severe eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).
  • The outpatient team consists of the child and adolescent team and an adult team.
    • The child and adolescent team works alongside youth and whānau, often using evidence based treatments including the Family Based Therapy (FBT) approach.
    • The adult team sees individuals 18 years and over, providing a range of treatments adapted to the individual's needs. This includes evidence-based approaches including Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT-E), Specialised Support Clinical Management (SSCM) and others.
  • Our teams also work alongside other services in a consultation and liaison model where another treating team (such as primary community mental health) is delivering the primary treatment while Tupu Ora provide an adjunct or support to the treating team re: eating difficulties.
  • Consultation and liaison pathway supports the primary and secondary sector through providing consultation and advice, 2nd opinion assessments, training and supervision for the Midlands, Metro Auckland and Northland Regions.
