The Allied Health Service at Auckland City Hospital provides a range of services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, speech language therapy and nutrition & dietetic.
Services are provided to a range of patient groups and in a variety of settings, with the majority of the workload being acute and rehabilitative interventions to inpatients at Auckland City Hospital. In general, inpatient services are provided within the context of a multidisciplinary team. Additionally, outpatients are seen in community-based settings and outpatient facilities. Outpatient services are provided either as part of a multidisciplinary team or with a single discipline focus, depending on patient needs and are situtated at the Greenlane site.

Services provided Allied Health - Physiotherapy Team Clinical Support
Physiotherapy Inpatients
The Physiotherapy Service covers all Adult inpatient areas at ACH (excluding Mental health). Physiotherapists use their in-depth knowledge of how the body works, combined with hands-on clinical skills, to assess, diagnose and treat people’s symptoms of illness, injury or disability. Our aim is to help people make the most of their potential to participate in a full active life. First, we assess a patient’s problems. Then we establish treatment and rehabilitation goals to help them move, learn new skills, cope with any remaining disabilities and improve how they carry out the activities of daily life and recreation and provide a discharge plan for a wide range of conditions. We work closely with medical, nursing, social work and speech, and occupational therapy teams. Physiotherapy is available Monday to Friday. The on-call and weekend service is in place for inpatients whose condition would deteriorate without physiotherapy or who need physiotherapy in order to be discharged.
Physiotherapy Outpatients
Physiotherapy Outpatients provide a physiotherapy service to the residents of ADHB. It operates as a secondary and tertiary service provider, seeing patients with a wide range of cardiac, respiratory, orthopaedic, rheumatological, musculoskeletal and pelvic disorders. Priority is given to hospital based referrals however, there is a contract to also see GP referrals for patients living within ADHB catchment area. Referrals are required from a doctor, or dentist, or physiotherapist, or from a clinic and these should be sent to the ADHB Central Referrals Office at the Greenlane Clinical Centre. Our emphasis is on movement and function promoting self-management through active physiotherapy and patient centred treatment.
For statutory holidays, weekend days or out of hours call-back, please use the hospital operator as per the usual weekend protocol.

Occupational Therapy/Therapy Assistants provide services to acute (medical, surgical, orthopaedics, oncology, neurology, including EDF and APU) and reablement areas.
Occupational Therapists focus on enabling people to do the things that they need to, want to and are expected to do (i.e. occupations) when they leave hospital. They work in multidisciplinary teams (MDT), assessing a patient's occupational performance and providing interventions for people who have identified difficulties with their everyday activities, tasks and roles. Occupational Therapists may also identify physical, affective or cognitive issues that may impact on a person's occupational performance/participation and safety in their home and community.
Occupational Therapy in acute and reablement services focus and promotes independence, safety and resumption of occupational participation and engagement. Occupational therapists may work with people to:

Adult Social Work
The Adult Social Work Service provides initial assessment and on-going intervention to all medical and surgical wards and some outpatient clinics, including the Adult Emergency Department, the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Admission & Planning Unit, Orthopaedics, Urology, Renal Services, Liver services, and General Medical and Surgery. The role of the social worker is to assess and support the patient and their family/Whanau in relation to their emotional, psychological, social and practical needs. Social workers are part of an inter-disciplinary team and work closely with physiotherapists and occupational therapists to co-ordinate a safe discharge.
On discharge from the hospital, the social worker may refer patients to appropriate community support services. Social workers are available Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm. An afterhours service is provided to the hospital for acute emergency situations. The majority of these referrals come from the Adult Emergency Department, Admission & Planning Unit and Department of Critical Care. This service is available outside of usual hours during the week and over the weekend and on public holidays.

Women’s Health Social Work
The Women’s Health Social Work team practices from a trauma-informed, relationship-based approach and provides holistic social work services to women and their whānau across a variety of inpatient, outpatient and community health settings. Service areas include Fertility Plus, Community Maternity, High Risk Maternity, Maternal Foetal Medicine, Gynaecology and Gynae/Oncology, Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, Epsom Day Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role of the Women’s Health social worker includes undertaking psychosocial assessment, therapeutic counselling, advocacy, pre-decision and post-procedural counselling, and grief and loss support. The team also has a key role in working alongside LMC Midwives with wahine hapū and whānau in pregnancy and coordinating multi-agency/multi-disciplinary risk assessment and safety planning often in the context of family violence and child protection worries. They partner closely with a range of community agencies to ensure continued support in the community. Social Workers are available Monday to Friday from 7:30am - 4:00pm, a weekend on-call service is available Friday 5:00pm – Monday 8:00am and on public holidays from 8:00am - 6:00pm.
