Congratulations to our own Nic Gini DStJ (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Nurse Unit Manager at Starship Child Health), who has been recognised as a Dame in the Order of St John Honours List 2024.
The Honours, sanctioned by His Majesty King Charles III, recognise the outstanding work and contribution made by members of St John.
Nic first received the news she was nominated on her birthday in February 2024 - “I guess not many people get a gift from the King,” she says.
She has a long history with Hato Hone St John, Starship Child Health and Health New Zealand | Te Toka Tumai Auckland. She has worked for Te Toka Tumai for 33 years, first joining Starship Child Health 22 years ago and working at Greenlane’s Intensive Care Unit prior to that.
Volunteering is simply “just what you do” for Nic, who became a St John Cadet at 9 years old. She was born into it, with both of her parents involved as St John volunteers. “My mother was a volunteer for over 50 years and was an active volunteer up until her death.”
There has been a special response from her Te Toka Tumai colleagues, and she is humbled by the recognition and those new letters next to her name.
“It doesn’t change what I do, and it doesn’t change who I am. It’s a reflection of not just what I’ve done with St John but the people around me – it’s a team effort. I couldn’t give the amount of time I give without my husband’s support and everyone I work with.”
Nic will attend a formal investiture ceremony with the Governor-General in Auckland with her whānau, colleagues and friends later this year.
Congratulations Nic from your proud colleagues at Te Toka Tumai Auckland!
