King's Birthday Honours 2024

We spotted some familiar faces in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours List. Congratulations to our current and former kaimahi who were appointed to The New Zealand Order of Merit this year.

Associate Professor Rohan Ameratunga, ONZM. For services to immunology.() Rohan has played a pivotal role in developing clinical services for patients with Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PIDs) in New Zealand, including formally establishing the Starship Hospital immunology service for children in 1991. 

Professor Ian Bissett, ONZM. For services to colorectal surgery and education.() Ian is a leading surgeon, educator and academic in the field of colorectal surgery. He has pioneered new surgical methods that have led to reduced cancer recurrence rates and hundreds of life-changing surgeries. Since 2002, he has worked as both a Lecturer and Colorectal Surgeon at the University of Auckland and Auckland City Hospital. 

Dr John Peek, CNZM. For services to fertility treatment and reproductive health.() John has been at the forefront of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and fertility treatment in New Zealand for 40 years. Dr Peek was instrumental in establishing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) services in New Zealand at National Women’s Hospital in Greenlane. ()

Professor Phillippa Poole, ONZM. For services to medical education.() Phillippa has contributed to the medical community in paid and voluntary capacities across the breadth of the medical workforce pipeline, from undergraduate education to hospital-based medicine and vocational specialist leadership. Phillippa was previously a consultant general physician at Auckland City Hospital. 

Amohaere Tangitu, MNZM. For services to Māori health.() Amohaere (Ngāti Awa, Te Arawa, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Maniapoto) spent 36 years of her career in the health sector advocating for cultural awareness and safety. Amohaere was involved in the planning and design of Starship Hospital. This initiative led to the launch of the Ronald McDonald House which opened in 1994.
